Decision-making

Decision-Making is an area which is in the common interest of academics from diverse backgrounds. While psychologists concern about how people make decision in their minds and the cognitive and neurological processes that lead people to different outcomes, business scientists are interested in the factors such as rewards and risk that are influencing people when making judgement. Decision-Making is in essence an interdisciplinary concept, as we can see it in different fields of study.

Recent advances in neurophysiology allow researchers to glimpse into the neural correlates of decision making (Gold, 2007). Researchers begin to realize decision-making can be altered by ‘influencing’ neural when empirical evidence has been found that applying direct stimulation, either magnetic or electrical affects participants’ risk-taking behavior (Hecht, Walsh & Lavidor, 2010, Boggio, Zaghi, Villani, Fecteaus, Pascual-Leone & Fregni, 2010; Fecteau, Knoch, Frehni, Sultani, Boggio & Pascual-Leone, 2007; Fecteau et. al, 2007) These neurophysiological studies have opened up a new research gap in the field – the neural ‘factors’ associated with decision-making.

The Interdisciplinary Research Platform provides a platform to bring researchers from the business and neuroscience areas together, where they can equip with essential conceptual understanding and techniques to bridge the laboratory findings with professional practices. The IRP also provides delicate research facilities and equipment to support researchers to conduct experiment related to neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience. Currently, two noninvasive brain stimulation tools, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), are now available for scientists to carry out advanced research at the University.
