The growth of knowledge is predominantly incremental in that we build on past knowledge more often than we displace it. A communal collection of knowledge requires mechanisms for disseminating and preserving knowledge within the community. It is paramount that the knowledge that is communicated is accurate, valid, reproducible, and practically useful. New advances in human knowledge are typically communicated through publications. There are many forms of publication, and the most important mechanism in the academia is the peer-reviewed journal paper. Publishing in high-impact and premium peer-reviewed journals is essential for grant allocation, tenure, and promotion decisions of university faculty. The process of publishing a manuscript in a high-impact journal starts with choosing an important research question, designing a sound study with statistic power, performing the work/data collection with impeccable integrity and attention to detail, writing an excellent manuscript, submitting to the right journal, responding to reviewer comments promptly and fully, and completing the standard post-acceptance checks. In this presentation, I will discuss the strategies for formulating high-impact research, the logistics of manuscript preparation to high-impact journals, submission and editorial handling, the likely outcomes, and the reasons for failure or success. The benchmarking of impactful peer-reviewed journals that best serve the purposes of informing about faculty’s research and advancing their academic careers will also be reviewed.


About the Presenter

Professor Tang is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Social Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She is also the Deputy Director of the Center for Family and Population Research and Co-chair of the Institutional Review Board at NUS.

Professor Tang obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of North Texas, USA and LLB at the University of London, UK. She has been a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of Graduate Studies in Clinical Psychology, Postgraduate Degree Programs in Trauma Psychology, Gender Research Program, and Gender Studies Program in the Chinese University of Hong Kong until 2007. 

Professor Tang was the past Chairperson of the Singapore Register of Psychologists and the past Chairperson of Division of Clinical Psychology and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Psychological Society. She was also a founding member of the Asian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and the Asian Association of Cognitive and Behavior Therapy.

Professor Tang was the Associate Editor of the Asian Journal of Psychology, and has been a member of the Editorial Boards for academic journals such as International Perspective in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation; International Journal of Stress Management; Asia-Pacific Journal of Counselling, Sex Roles, and Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being.
