Synopsis

Evidence-based practice (EBP) advocates for improved client outcomes by informing practice with relevant research rather than relying on theoretical tradition and practice authority. EBP requires that practitioners (doctors, psychologists, counsellors, and social workers, etc.) use the best available evidence from systematic research in their field and integrate this knowledge with their own expertise. This integration must be accomplished in the context of each client’s individual characteristics, culture, and preferences. Interventions will then be uniquely customized for each client using a comprehensive and practical framework. Nowadays, practitioners have increasing access to tools that allow for evaluating the effectiveness of their practices, including reliable and valid measurement instruments that help obtain consistent and accurate measures of the presenting problems. Research on EBP has also been directed toward discovering empirically supported variables that are related to treatment outcomes. As such, EBP requires new skills of practitioners, including efficient literature search, integration of current research with knowledge of client values and needs, formulation of specific and measurable treatment goals, implementation of research-based practices, and evaluation of effectiveness of their practices. This workshop aims to provide training of the above skills. It includes 3 sessions, with each session focusing on one of the following topics: (1) critical review of conceptual frameworks of EBP, (2) translating and benchmarking research evidences into EBP generalizations, and (3) exploring and developing interdisciplinary research in EBP.

 

About the Presenter

Professor Tang is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Social Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She is also the Deputy Director of the Center for Family and Population Research and Co-chair of the Institutional Review Board at NUS.

Professor Tang obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of North Texas, USA and LLB at the University of London, UK. She has been a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of Graduate Studies in Clinical Psychology, Postgraduate Degree Programs in Trauma Psychology, Gender Research Program, and Gender Studies Program in the Chinese University of Hong Kong until 2007. 

Professor Tang was the past Chairperson of the Singapore Register of Psychologists and the past Chairperson of Division of Clinical Psychology and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Psychological Society. She was also a founding member of the Asian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and the Asian Association of Cognitive and Behavior Therapy.

Professor Tang was the Associate Editor of the Asian Journal of Psychology, and has been a member of the Editorial Boards for academic journals such as International Perspective in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation; International Journal of Stress Management; Asia-Pacific Journal of Counselling, Sex Roles, and Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being.
