Speaker:    Prof. Ian Shaw
Summary:    Prof. Shaw will elaborate how beliefs regarding the nature of ‘evidence’ remain important areas for discussion in both disciplines and professions. Foundationalist’ positions, regarding the role of observation as discloser of the true nature of reality, persist despite their generally agreed weaknesses. There is briefly discussion on the different ways faith in science of social work has manifested itself over history, including how the methodological implications have been taken up, doing so by looking at how arguments for ‘experimental sociology’ arose – and died – during the last century. Evidence-based practice as a series of knowledge claims in ways allowing a constructive assessment of its potential will also be outlined. 
Prof. Shaw will illustrate several ways that strong forms of evidence-based practice have been modified in American social work and by some working in Hong Kong. Can we ever prevent professionals from doing more harm than good? Can we determine with great certainty via research alone whether they are doing harm or good? Does evaluating policies and practices by means of research always lead to more good than harm?

Prof. Ian Shaw is S R Nathan Professor of Social Work at National University Singapore. He was Professor of Social Work at the University of York, England and at University of Aalborg (Denmark). He was the first chair of the European Social Work Research Association (ESWRA), and founder editor of the journal “Qualitative Social Work”. Author of almost 100 peer reviewed papers, over 20 books, and approximately 60 book chapters plus research reports. He has written extensively recently on practice research, the relationship between social work and sociology over the last century, and research networks.

Summary:    There are adverse effects on service users of uncoordinated mental health and child protection services. Prof. Carpenter will include the discussion of challenges to collaborative practice, including stereotyping, lack of understanding of roles and responsibilities of other professionals and of how to collaborate. Learning together to work together - Interprofessional Education and Training was promoted and the evidence of its effectiveness and outcomes for service users will be elaborated. The evaluation research methods included cohort surveys with questionnaires, observations and interviews, measuring outcomes for users and collecting user feedback. Also its theoretical perspective from social psychology with reference to sociology is highlighted.
Social workers, health care professionals and journalists are welcome to join.

Prof. John Carpenter is Emeritus Professor in the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol and in the Department of Sociology, Durham University, UK. He is a registered social worker and chartered psychologist. Thirty years ago, while at Bristol, he designed, ran and evaluated one of the first programmes of interprofessional education in England. He has since undertaken comprehensive, longitudinal evaluations of interprofessional education and interagency working in mental health and a national evaluation of the outcomes of interagency training for safeguarding children (child protection). He is co-author of “Interprofessional Education and Training” (2nd edition. 2016) published by Bristol Policy Press.

Summary:   The use of evidence in education has a long and divisive history. For over 100 years there has been international debate about the best forms of research for improving student learning in classrooms. Two recent trends have reignited discussions about evidence-based education; the rise of cognitive neuroscience and the constant evolution of educational technologies. In this presentation, Dr. Lodge will discuss the research methods used in the learning sciences (including neuroscience) and how research from the laboratory can inform the improvement of education as technology increasingly impacts on the classroom. In this discussion, the limitations of evidence-based policy and practice in education will be pointed out. Teachers and design-based approaches are critical to effective evidence-informed practice. Translational methods of research and implementation science are important foundations for effectively taking the findings from the laboratory and applying them to the classroom.

Jason Lodge, PhD is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology in the School of Education and Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation at The University of Queensland, Australia. He is also Honorary Principal Research Fellow in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, The University of Melbourne, Australia. Jason’s research focuses on the cognitive, metacognitive, social and emotional mechanisms of concept learning and conceptual change. He also conducts research on the translation of the science of learning into practice in educational settings, particularly in digital learning environments and higher education.

Summary:    Evidence based management at its heart is applying sound research to the practice of management. In this talk, Dr. Bowler translates two decades of experience and research into practical application for both future research directions and management practice. This talk interprets his research for evidence-based management to improve employee engagement, performance and retention ultimately improving department and firm performance as well as how to conduct workplace experiments to test business practices before scaling to the entire organization. A question and discussion session will follow.
Social workers, health care professionals and journalists are welcome to join.

Dr. Wm. Matthew Bowler is the Director of MBA Programs and Brenneman Professor of Management in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University. He earned his PhD in Management at the University of Kentucky, served on the faculty at The University of North Texas, and is currently Associate Professor of Management Oklahoma State University. His research interests include social networks, leadership, OCB and deviance. His research appears in Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management and Human Resource Management Review, among others. Dr. Bowler teaches and provides professional development workshops on management, leadership, leading change, building one’s professional network and evidenced based management. He also runs two property management enterprises and an ad-hoc management consultancy.

Call for Papers

The conference is interested in connecting innovative ideas and nourishing scholars in the development of high impact researches. Here we call for papers joining oral or poster presentation or panel or demonstration session with respect to the two conference themes: 1. interdisciplinary research in evidence-based practice; 2. research methods and localization of evidence-based practice.

Rules and Guidelines
Oral or Poster Presentation

  1. Submission of abstract within 500 words is required, with research objectives, proposed methodology and a discussion of expected outcomes.
  2. Completed research papers, student papers, case studies, work-in-progress research, research note, agenda and proposal related to evidence-based practice are welcome.
  3. Individual or multiple authors are welcome.
  4. Once the submission is accepted, at least one of the authors must present at the conference.
  5. The language of the papers must be in English.
  6. The reference style must be in APA format.
  7. All documents should be prepared in MS WORD or PDF (version 1.7 or above) format in single-spaced with one-inch margin and fonts in 12 points Times New Roman.
  8. Oral presentation will consist of three to four presenters in a 60-minute session. Presenter is expected to present the paper and answer audience’s questions within 15-20 minutes. The presentation slides should be in PPT or PDF (version 1.7 or above) format and submitted in advance.
  9. Poster presentation will be displayed in a designated area. Corresponding author is required to present the poster at the conference. Poster format should be prepared according to the template provided.
  10. Accepted paper abstracts will be printed on our conference proceeding. 
  11. High-quality conference papers will be considered for publication with the Asia Pacific Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy upon mutual agreement.

Panel or Demonstration Session

  1. The panel session requires one chairman to host the session with a minimum of three presenters, to discuss a common topic and integrate different perspectives.
  2. The demonstration session aims to introduce new or exploratory research work, hardware, software, skill or technique in teaching and learning.
  3. Submission summary within 200 words is required including the following information:
    1. The title of the session, a statement of objectives, list of speakers in the panel session or a description of the intended audience in the demonstration session
    2. For Panel Session: Chairman’s name, department, affiliation and email address
    3. For Demonstration Session: a brief description of hardware, software or other equipment to be demonstrated
    4. Abstract of the presenters within 50 words each (optional)
  4. Each session is 60 minutes.
  5. Completed research papers, student papers, case studies, work-in-progress research, research note, agenda and proposal related to evidence-based practice are welcome.
  6. The summaries of accepted sessions will be printed on our conference proceeding. 
  7. All conference attendees are welcome to attend the panel or demonstration session(s).
